Bonnie Ramone grew up on a 103 acre cattle farm on the border of the West Virginian panhandle in a town with 3 stop signs, a 2 lane bowling alley, and 2 working clowns. Despite this fact, she can mostly be found dancing like a member of the Peanuts to Depeche Mode or supporting a local drag show on any given Saturday. She reconciles this dichotomy in her music, and doesn’t seem to find any difference in them: infectious hooks, guitar with a bit too much reverb and a little tremolo, catchy bass lines, and introspective lyrics that tell a sad story… is it Hank or the Cure? Does it matter?
Bonnie & the Mere Mortals is a project that equally sounds like something you’ve never heard before and something you’ve been hearing your whole life. A genre bend that draws you in, but is as easy on the eyes as it is on the ears. A project that’s pretty sure Hank done it this way, but Robert Smith was on the money as well, and that’s no problem. A live show that is just as at home with an introspective elegy as a barn burner. As electric on stage with singer/songwriters or drag queens. An aesthetic that is just as much classic Nashville as it is glam. Blending the earnest song-telling and excitement of a 70s Era Grand Ole Opry performance with the technology and theatricality of a goth showcase, the Mere Mortals find themselves halfway between Dolly Parton and Elvira, and at home anyplace.
Their last album “Live & Unplugged at the Club Cafe” was filmed live in front of a sold-out studio audience on January 14, 2023 in their hometown. Receiving high praise from outlets like Authority Magazine, Americana UK, and being named one of the top 20 country albums of 2023 by Rainbow Rodeo, The Mere Mortals then hit the road. From the Smokies to the Rockies, the Mere Mortals trailblazed dozens of new markets and began to set the foundation of their small army of super fans. As a tattoo artist of 15 years, Bonnie has even begun giving Bonnie & the Mere Mortals tattoos on the road. They set benchmarks like being invited to several Nashville listening rooms, the Red Rocks Amphitheater, have headlined and performed at a number of PRIDE festivals across the nation, and have become fan favorites among the Brandi Carlile fan community.
In 2024, along with a host of touring and events, the Mere Mortals headed back into the studio armed with whiskey on their fingers and road-tested songs to create their newest release, “Take me to the Moon.” Set to release on August 30th, this Sophomore studio LP promises to push them to new heights and new places within the realm of “Southern Gothic.” Their first single release, “Wildfires,” is an unrelenting gallop that blends live country drumming and new wave electronic percussion. While managing to keep tongue planted firmly in cheek, Bonnie’s signature belts and yodels span her sizable range throughout the song, and a never-before-seen guitar solo from her to boot. “Wildfires” has already set streaming records for the band in the short time it’s been released, and their newest single “When She Whispers” promises to continue this trend of growth. They have 2 more singles planned for this release, and the next up on the docket, entitled “Bechdel Test,” includes 4 other performing acts and promotion that includes over 20 musicians and influencers that together boast over 2 million followers.
